Hello and welcome to the first ever edition of Natural Care Trends
Natural cosmetic ingredients are an important group of products in our industry and consumer interest is set to grow. Mintel figures show that 53% of UK consumers use skincare products with natural ingredients and 21% consider if a product is organic/natural before making a purchase.
In this first article, we will look at two natural materials which are trending right now as well as some new launches from natural cosmetics companies. Also featured are some "Naturals" stories which are in the news at this time.
The latter part of 2016 saw further interest in natural and organic beauty due to increased curiosity amongst women of all ages about what goes into our beauty products. So it is perhaps of little wonder that Pantone’s colour for 2017 is called "Greenery" - a citrus toned yellow-green.
For further proof that organic is going mainstream take a look at this Telegraph article on the top Organic brands
This year Cornelius is going to be looking closely at the organic and natural associated bodies criteria. From this, we will be producing our own set of organically listed materials with formulations to be unveiled at SCS Formulate in November.
The Natural & Organic Products Europe show was held at ExCel on 2nd and 3rd April and attended Chantal James on behalf of Cornelius. Her visit provided many useful insights. The event, now in its 22nd year, featured hundreds of exhibitors promoting ideas such as vegan haircare, allergy-free products, botanical skincare, do-it-yourself cosmetics and eco-luxury organic. Seminars and other events provided lots more information. This link has a round-up of the event.
Soaper Duper is a brand which has really hit the headlines in the early part of 2017. They also support the charities Clean the World and Water Aid.
Currently Tesco has exclusivity but the Soaper Duper brand will soon be available at more outlets in the UK, US and Canada. Products come in five perfume collections - Lemon, Ginger, Yuzufruit & Fig, Vanilla & Shea Butter and Fruity Green Tuberose - across six product types Body Butter, Body Lotion, Body Wash, Body Scrub, Hand Cream and Hand Wash.

Traditional Indian spice turmeric has long been known for its anti-inflammatory properties and of late it has received much attention due to its popularity with clean-eating advocates. Most recently it has been recommended by beauty experts as an ingredient in masks and creams to combat acne and skin flare-ups. YouTube is awash with vloggers extolling the healing benefits of homemade masks using turmeric's medicinal properties to improve acne scarring and reduce breakouts.
Khiel's Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque instantly brightens and energises the look of dull, fatigued skin and restores a healthy, rosy appearance. Formulated with Cranberry and Turmeric this invigorating formulation helps to visibly even the look of skin, while crushed Cranberry Seeds gently exfoliate for smoother, brighter, illuminated skin. The rinse-off formula should be used after cleansing and toning skin.
Aveda Tulasara Wedding Overnight Eye Masque is a 97% naturally derived, ultra-rich cream masque that works during the night, a key time for skin’s natural repair, to smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles and give skin a firmer, more lifted look. Overnight it diminishes the appearance of dark circles and puffiness with continued nightly use. It fortifies and strengthens skin’s protective lipid barrier, sealing in moisture. Turmeric extract helps even skin tone by diminishing the look of dark circles over time. Inspired by the haldi ceremony from India, a pre-wedding tradition in which a homemade turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom for glowing skin on their wedding day.
Honey continues to be a popular ingredient as part of the Gastronomia (intersection of food/beauty) trend and it is likely that there will be an increased demand for it as a cosmetic ingredient in 2017. Honey, particularly Manuka, possesses unique antimicrobial and healing properties which are desirable for many cosmetic products. Some big brands have launched products containing honey this year:
Blithe has added to its patting mask collection with the Energy Yellow Citrus and Honey variant. It contains lemon and honey extracts rich in vitamin C for a clear and bright complexion. Lactic acid helps remove dead skin cells to reveal smoother fresh and glowing skin. Splash masks, also called patting waters, are innovative mask formulations originating from the traditional Korean method of cleansing with rice water. A cap full of the concentrated liquid mask is diluted in a basin full of water and splashed/patted onto the face for 15 seconds. This short treatment time is said to provide all the benefits of a face mask in 15 seconds.
The Body Shop Almond Milk & Honey collection features community trade honey from Ethiopia. It is specially designed to care for dry and sensitive skin, helping calm tight, dry skin to leave it soft and smooth.
Garnier is really buying into the honey trend with three newly launched honey products.
Ultimate Blends Blonde Illuminator Shampoo contains chamomile and acacia honey, a blend said to naturally illuminate and soften blonde tresses.
Ultimate Blends Honey Treasures Restoring Hand Cream combines nourishing honey and revitalising royal jelly, that instantly restores softness to dry hands. It has a rich and creamy texture which, with regular use, protects hands on a daily basis.
Skin Active Repairing Honey Mask, described as a new generation of face mask combining honey and ceramide in a creamy texture that nourishes for soothed, comforted and velvety skin.
If pollution was the trend story of 2016, then 2017 is the year we'll see the beauty industry wage war on 'inflammaging' - the low-level inflammation which occurs as we age. It happens at different rates depending on a person's genetic disposition and lifestyle choices and is regarded as a large factor in the breakdown of collagen and elastin.
Beuti Skincare is one brand who are ahead of the curve with products designed to combat the inflammaging process. Their Beauty Sleep Elixir supports skin barrier function, a key role in fighting inflammaging and is packed with anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients that counteract irritation and inflammation. Fourteen oils, including camelia, strawberry and pomegranate, supply skin with a super boost of vitamins, minerals and a complete omega hit of 3,5,6,7 and 9 so you wake up to a beautiful glowing skin.
Softalia from a sustainable plantation in Australia counteracts inflammation and has unique activity on the skin due to its ximenynic acid content helping hydration and reducing fine lines.
Caribbean coral neutralises the enzyme responsible for skin ageing, acne and sunburn and is one of the world's most potent anti-inflammatory ingredients. The formulation is 100% natural and contains 98% organic oils.

South Korea continues to be a region which the rest of the beauty world looks to for emerging trends. At this years In Cosmetics Mintel featured a host of exciting new Korean products one of which was Innisfree Black Green Tea Mask. It contains 55% fresh Jeju green tea leaves which have been grown organically and then aged by fermenting twice a day for 100 days. The mask is high in nutrients and antioxidants with a cooling sensation on application. Long term it increases moisture levels and promotes a firm, clear, smooth complexion.
