We’ve all put a few pounds over the Christmas period but now it’s time to get back at it…  Not so fast though - step away from the diet pills or torturing yourself with one carrot stick at lunch!

It’s all about losing weight in a natural and healthy way. Here are some top tips to get you on your way to losing weight naturally:

Fibre, fibre, fibre

Why not try changing to wholemeal bread, whole wheat pasta and high-fibre breakfast cereal along with eating at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day. This will get you closer to achieving the recommended intake of 30g fibre per day.

Reduce your sugar intake

Sugar in people’s diets should be halved, according to report by government adviser SACN, who recommend limiting sugar intake to 25g (5-6 teaspoons) for women and 35g (7-8 teaspoons for men). If "no sugar" is difficult to achieve, why not try "reduced sugar" versions of your favourite products.

Stop that snacking habit

A high protein breakfast is a great way to start the day - keeps you fuller for longer and so less likely to snack later in the day. A recent study found that a high protein breakfast, containing 35 grams of protein, prevented gains of body fat, reduced daily food intake, suppressed feelings of hunger and stabilized glucose levels. So what are you waiting for - dig into that sausage and egg sarnie!

Ditch those carbohydrate free diets

Studies find that 50% of the population’s daily energy should come from carbohydrates such as bread, cereal and pasta compared to only 5% coming from sugars. The only thing is remembering to choose wholegrain varieties where possible.

Fabulous fish

A healthy diet should include at least 2 portions of fish a week, including one oily fish such as salmon or fresh tuna, which is rich in long-chain omega-3 acids that can help to keep you heart healthy. Shellfish including prawns, mussels and scallops are also low in fat and a source of selenium, zinc, iodine and copper!

Think twice before having that second pint

As seen in the recent news, alcohol labeling could soon include ‘burn off’ information, which could sway certain individuals to not pick up that extra bottle of beer.
