Hello and welcome to the second edition of Trends! We hope you continue to enjoy this newsletter and please feel free to pass it onto your colleagues. 

The past year has sparked new interest in the growing trend of health and wellness. The six dimensions that make up wellness (as outlined by the National Wellness Institute) are emotional, occupational, physical, social, intellectual and spiritual.

The importance of feeling healthy and well, both inside and out, is highlighted by the rise of products containing probiotics including ice-cream by Minioti and Daily Cultures tea. Daily Cultures products are scientifically proven to be 10x more effective than dairy and have the added consumer benefit of being dairy and sugar free. Giving the body a dose of beneficial bacteria in the form of probiotics helps to sustain the microorganism population residing in our gut. These microorganisms are responsible for our immune system, general feeling of wellness and our emotional wellbeing. Our skin can also be affected positively by probiotics. 

On the subject of healthy skin, in May this year Nutricoa launched two chocolate bars aptly named ‘Nutricoa Beauty’ and ‘Nutricoa Well-Being’; each fortified with various vitamins and superfoods, all providing unique benefits.

Probiotics need to overcome the challenges during the production of foods. This includes a number of processes as well as the journey to the gut, where they are subjected to high temperatures and acidic conditions. 

Today, statements on packaging claiming incorporation of probiotics are not allowed. However, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is considering a change in the legislation on labelling which will allow products to do this. If EFSA does change their position on this, it will open the doors for new claims.

Many people get osteoporosis, causing the bones to weaken. Making sure calcium levels are high can slow the onset. Omega 3 EPA and DHA are recommend to keep hearts, eyes and brains healthy and lower the risk of dementia and memory loss. As we age, protein intake should be optimised in order to prevent loss of muscle mass and strength, increase satiety and weight loss.
