Jennifer's Cosmetics Trend Report: September 2016

(Posted on 12/09/16)

Hello and welcome to this month's edition of Trends!

Elizabeth Arden is using a clever marketing campaign to promote their anti-pollution product Prevage City Smart Hydrating Shield SPF50. Posters advertising the product at Oxford Street tube station have digitally activated panels (using Digital out of Home or DOOH technology), showing real time pollution readings supplied by LondonAir. Created by Grand Visual, the campaign hopes to highlight the damage pollution can do to the skin and is running alongside a larger campaign in print, digital iterations and video on demand.

The product itself comprises triple action protection with DNA Enzyme Complex™ containing plankton, arabidopsis thaliana and ocean bacteria extracts; Anti-Pollution shield technology (patent pending Anti-Pollution complex) containing idebenone, green tea, thiotaine, ferulic acid and l-carnosine, to neutralize free radical damage caused by pollution and UV exposure; and anti-pollution shield technology, which forms an invisible protective barrier broad spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen. The product blocks pollutants and 98% of UVB rays. The brand says that this the first-of-its-kind skin shield to combine pollution and UV protection, explaining that 80% of all signs of ageing to young skin is caused by environmental damage. The sheer, hydrating, invisible protection improves skin condition and helps it look younger for longer.

Cornelius can help: Silab has been creating anti-pollution actives for many years and their latest, Mitokinyl, really taps into the current buzz around anti-pollution products. It is rich in glucomannan from the yeast pichia heedi and protects skin against urban stress. By regulating the synthesis of mitokines and the deactivation of AhR (major biological pathways identified in the fight against pollution), it allows the skin to recover an effective functional barrier.

Mustaev Mood Therapy Sheet Masks from Korea come in individual sachets and each one corresponds to a mood and accompanying skin need. It would seem that some of the names have got a little confused in translation but the meanings are still discernible. Sadness Mask "to give enliven skin from depressing difficulty"; Pleasure to "restore late night party skin", Joy protects skin from "outdoor activities" and Anger cools the skin "from excessive heat red line from stress". Each has a water jelly base and, mask dependent, they contain sodium hyaluronate, coconut oil, vitamin C and niacinamide. "Anger" even contains snail mucus!

Garnier's Micellar Gel will not be available in the shops until early next year but British Beauty Blogger was sent a preview sample and has done a sneak peek post. This gel contains cleansing oil droplets and is swiped onto the skin with a cotton wool pad and then wiped away with a damp cloth. L'Oreal Paris and La Roche Posay already have micellar gels in the market place.

Doll Face Sweet Rose 5-in-1 Cleansing Cold Cream is a make-up remover, cleanser, moisturiser, exfoliator and brightener in one. The retro inspired beauty product is designed to leave skin clean, refreshed, smooth and glowing. It contains rose hip seed oil, coconut oil and yogurt extract - the lactic acid of which acts as an exfoliator. It is a nourishing cleansing option for those with drier skin types. It should be left on for a few minutes to allow it to dissolve make-up and then removed with a damp flannel.

Cornelius can help: Our lactic acid, Ritalac LA, is a product of fermentation. We have recently used this effective exfoliating material in our Korean-inspired Splash Mask - part of our popular Waters Kit launched earlier this summer.

Available from 4th October is the Sarah Chapman Lash Boosting Eye Cleanser which has been created to improve the length and thickness of lashes (and brows) whilst removing make-up. The hydrating, soothing formulation contains cucumber and damask rose water and doubles as a gentle eye soak when saturated cotton wool pads are left on the eye area.

Make Me Matte - Lipstick Mattifier from Saturated Colour transforms any satin, creamy or sheeny lipstick into a matte finish. The nourishing formulation contains oils and waxes as well as talc to create the matte look without dryness. This link shows what a pretty effect this provides and how you can transform an lipstick into this Autumn's most fashionable finish.

Cornelius can help: We are experts in formulating products of all different textures and incorporating materials from our portfolio to create different effects and finishes. Please speak to your rep for further details.

New research from Mintel finds that while UK sales of lip colour cosmetics grew by 8% between 2014 and 2015, sales will rise by an estimated 12% in 2016 to reach a stunning £306 million. This is the most essential of all make-up products - 40% of all UK women purchased lipstick in the last year and that figure rises to 48% for women aged 16-24.

Clinique Lash Power Flutter-to-Full Mascara is a customisable mascara with 3 application settings. A twist setting on the barrel controls the amount of mascara on the brush for different effects - from natural to dramatic. The mascara provides 24 hour wear that is easily removed with warm water.

Cornelius can help: Our principal Phoenix has a wide portfolio of raw materials available to improve mascara formulations depending on which properties the formulator wishes to impart. We conducted tests to determine which material was the best at achieving waterproof results and found Pecosil SH-25L to be excellent at resisting water. This is due to the material ability to form a covalent bond between pigment and hair. For more information, please contact jennifer.hermitage@cornelius.co.uk

Tanning brand Cocoa Brown has created Golden Goddess Shimmering Dry Body Oil. This super dry oil is highly pigmented with shimmering gold pearl and can be used as a full body highlighter, or in smaller quantities to highlight cheekbones - apparently this is how Khloe Kardashian uses it!

Cornelius can help: Our large portfolio of pearl pigments contains an impressive selection of gold tones of different hues and particle sizes.

Aussie brand Buddy Scrub has a selection of body scrub pouches, the latest way to use natural exfoliants for softer, smoother skin. Five variants are available - Green Tea, Raw Cacao, Bamboo, Coffee and (the product of the moment) Activated Charcoal. The charcoal formulation uses natural exfoliants sea salt and sugar, nourishing coconut, jojoba and grape seed oils and purifying charcoal with their collective vitamins and minerals to naturally soften and exfoliate the body.

Cornelius can help: We supply charcoal powder and are also able to supply a wide and varied range of natural oils from Olvea.

Label.Men is the latest range from professional haircare brand label.m and the official product of London Fashion week. The range reflects the latest trends in hairdressing and barbering and was developed by Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck and the Toni & Guy session team. Products include Scalp Purifying Shampoo, Invigorating Conditioner, Thickening Tonic, Scalp Tonic, Grooming Cream, Sculpting Pomade, Max Wax, Deconstructor and Cologne Hair & Body.

Cornelius can help: Luviset One is a versatile styling polymer which is self-thickening to provide clear gel systems. It works in cold process systems and the end texture and rheology can be dramatically altered by changing the wax types and levels used when creating styling products. We have created TexStylers, a range of hair stylers that all have the same base but have very different textures due to the different waxes and inclusion levels; Elastic uses shea olein, Bouncy and Spongy use laurel wax at different levels and Marshmallow contains Purester 24.

And finally...
