Antioxidants are a current buzzword in skincare. Dermatologist Dr Stefanie Williams says an antioxidant is a daily must “If you want to keep your skin in its best condition and delay the ageing process on a cellular level”.

Antioxidants help to protect the skin from daily aggressors such as pollution, UV rays and blue light. A number of antioxidant serums are available in the market place. These are designed as the first step in a skincare regime, after cleansing. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant but there are a couple of key points to bear in mind: Many concentrations are too low - between 10 and 20% is needed to be effective; it degrades quickly and should be used as fresh as possible.
To combat the degradation problem, Clinique have implemented some clever packaging solutions for their Vitamin C collection which was launched earlier in the year. The three-sku range features stay-fresh packaging which isolates pure Vitamin C until activation. Each product contains a 10% concentration of Vitamin C.
NIOD’s Survival is a range comprising four protection systems for different skin types. Each supports healthy skin defences against environmental and lifestyle-related assaults. They offer protection against the effects of nitrogen radicals, glycation and advanced glycation end-products (AGE), pollution, smog, stress, infra-red and blue light. Each product contains an impressive selection of antioxidants including: Purified Lutein, Purified Deep-Sea Algae, Purified Mediterranean Brown Algae, Yeast-Derived Superoxide Dismutase and Fractionated Melanin.
There are many antioxidants available and they can be used in infinite combinations to supply consumers with sophisticated skin protection products.
Cornelius can help: Our new Youth Drops formulation, part of our latest kit, contains an organic certified alternative to Vitamin C - Ridulisse C Bio. Like Viatmin C, it boosts the synthesis of Collagen 1 to restructure and redensify the fibre structure within the skin but it doesn’t have the associated stability issues. Based on Sunflower extracts, Helioxine is a natural photo-protector that shields against UV damage, quenching photo-induced free-radicals.

Blue light protection is quite a trend at the moment and bareMineral’s latest tinted moisturiser offers protection from the damaging rays given off by digital devices. Complexion Rescue Defense Radiant Protective Tint  Moisturizer helps combat the effects of blue light whilst also providing protection from pollution and UV rays. It contains sustainably sourced cacao from Peru with high levels of antioxidants.
Cornelius can help: Silab’s Oxygeskin, derived from the nasturtium flower, limits damage caused to skin cells by repeated exposure to blue light. Digital pollution and age affect the oxygenation of skin cells and tissues, causing cellular metabolism to decline and skin to appear dull and irregular. Oxygeskin reinvigorates the oxygenation process, restoring the skin’s adaptive capacity to overcome hypoxic stress by boosting the HIF-1a oxygen sensor.

Dermatology developed brand Exuviance are to launch Probiotic Lysate Anti-Pollution Essence. The concentrated product is designed to re-balance and strengthen all skin types for a more radiant, younger looking complexion. It contains 10% Probiotic Lysate which helps gently rebalance and optimise a healthy skin appearance, 8% Polyhydroxy Acid to diminish the look of environmental aging and restore radiance and super moisturiser Hyaluronic Acid to quench dryness and leave skin hydrated.
Cornelius can help: Ecobiotys® is an active ingredient inspired by the porcelain flowers ability to regulate its nectar. The active is based on yeast obtained from the porcelain flower and specifically works to re-balance the microbiota of mature skin, reinforcing immune and mechanical barriers and acting on the distribution of bacterial communities. The quality of the skin barrier is improved and the radiance of the complexion is enhanced.

Cosmewax has developed a collection of facial and body care products for sufferers of dermatitis. All of the products in the range - which includes washes, creams and balms - contain a balanced composition of lipid ingredients to stabilise the skin’s protective barrier and prevent TEWL. All products are free from perfumes, colourants, preservatives, mineral oil, silicones, EDTA and SLES.
Cornelius can help: We have a wide portfolio of oils, butter and waxes which can be used as part of rich and nourishing formulations. Olvea’s Apricot kernel oil is rich in oleic acid and omega-6, an essential fatty acid which the human body is unable to synthesise, and which plays an important role in the structure of cell membrane. It reduces TEWL by restoring the skins hydro lipidic film. Beeswax has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties as well as an excellent barrier function that helps to seal moisture into the skin.
BASF’s Power of 3 is the collective name for three separate raw materials when they are used in combination. Eumulgin SG is an emulsifier and stabiliser, Cutina PES is a viscosity modifier and skin feel enhancer, Cosmedia SP is a stabiliser, viscosity modifier and skin feel agent. Together these three materials form ultra stable emulsion bases, ranging from milk thin viscosities to rich body butter, which can be added to and adapted as required.

Traction alopecia is a fairly common problem to wearers of hairstyles that place too much strain on the follicles. Typically the problem, often characterised by thin edges, is experienced by those with Afro hair who have worn hairstyles such as too tight braids over long periods of time. UK brand Ms Hair has created their Hair Foundation Kit to allow black women to successfully camouflage thin areas, especially edges, creating a fuller, natural looking hair line.
Cornelius can help: We offer a selection of iron oxide pigments in a variety of colours which can be blended to create a spectrum of natural tones. Our formulation Face Fix was designed to keep make-up in place but would also work to keep hair make-up fixed.
