Five Achievable New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthier You in 2017

(Posted on 09/01/17)

The party is over and we’re back to work. Many of us will have stepped onto the scales only to look down in dismay at where the needle is pointing (or worse, the cold hard numbers of a digital display).

OK, so it’s time for the healthy eating plan and exercise regime to start but, let’s face it, we’re probably secretly acknowledging that we’ll fall off the wagon pretty quickly. How about some achievable New Year’s resolutions this time round? Allow us to help…

  1. Keep hydrated

The NHS Eatwell Guide says we should drink six to eight glasses of fluid a day. Water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks all count.

Healthy drinks are crucial to a balanced diet. Checking the nutrition labels on soft drinks such as fruit juices and fizzy drinks can help you make healthier choices and cut down on your sugar intake.

How we can help: Cornelius distributes sweeteners such as Erylite Stevia by Jungbunzlauer BVand Xylitol by Shandong Longlive Bio-Technology Co.Ltd to include in drinks as an alternative to sugar.

Fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies contain a variety of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to our health. This market has really taken off in 2016 and features heavily in 2017 food and drink trends. We can expect to see more weird and wonderful drink variations appearing on supermarket shelves in 2017.

  1. Eat healthier

A balanced diet is key, connects to so many aspects of our wellbeing, and helps us to feel at our best. Too much sugar, salt and fat and not enough fruit and vegetables are the classic slip-ups. It is important that we proactively keep a watch over how much of each food group we consume in order to intake the right amount of nutrients to maintain a healthy body weight. See the NHS Eatwell Guide for further advice on what an adult should consume to maintain a healthy balanced diet.

Functional foods are also a key trend for 2017 and beyond; brands are incorporating additional fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals into everyday foods such as bread and cereal to help consumers reach their recommended intake of nutrients.

How we can help: Cornelius supplies Bettergerm, a de-fatted wheatgerm from New Holland Extraction. The powder can be used in various applications including bread, cakes, pasta and sports nutrition. Being naturally high in fibre, nutrients and vitamins, and containing almost zero fat and calorie content, Bettergerm is an ideal addition to food goods.

  1. Avoid negativity – eliminate negative aspects of your life

All we need is positivity! Surround yourself with positive people and distance yourself from those who emit negativity – you just don’t need it.

Negative emotions cause the production of “stress” hormones, cortisol and adrenaline, which can result in inflammation and lead to many health related problems. These can include depression and anxiety, weight problems, skin conditions, heart disease and sleeping issues.

Choose the positive path whenever you can and support and inspire others. It’s remarkable how good helping someone can feel. Do something you love, and do it for you. Be the positivity you want to see in others. And smile – you might just make someone’s day.

How we can help: Cornelius distributes Davisco’s Alpha-lactalbumin, which is the purest isolated form of bovine alpha-lactalbumin commercially available. The ingredient has been shown to improve sleep quality, cognitive performance and mood under stress.

  1. Improve concentration and mental skills

Plenty of rest, advanced planning, a balanced diet, keeping hydrated and regular exercise are some of the secrets to improved concentration levels. In general, concentration can also be affected by the type of environment you are in, such as your level of comfort and how many distractions surround you.

It is important to keep our brains working, especially as we get older. Sometimes daily life just doesn’t challenge us, incorporating mental exercise into your routine such as keeping a diary, taking up new hobbies and reading regularly could help. Here are some useful mental exercise tips.

How we can help: Cornelius supplies Alzchem’s Creapure®, a premium brand for creatine, that is recognised worldwide. Creatine is a natural substance produced by the body. It plays a key role in transporting and storing energy in every cell. Many reputable researchers believe that creatine is important in maintaining general health – in muscles, bones, brain and the rest of the nervous system – especially among older people.

  1. Become more active

Many of us can become discouraged when trying to stick to fitness goals and in achieving weight loss. One way to combat this is to inject some fun into getting fit this year. Why not try something such as signing up for an obstacle course race? They’re fun, adventurous and give you something light-hearted to work towards. See Muddy Race and Xrunners’s for 2017 fun run agendas. Other ideas to keep active include:

  • Walking where possible instead of driving or taking the bus
  • Taking the stairs instead of the lift
  • Kill two birds with one stone by turning household chores into a workout
  • Use your time well - Brits love to queue – do stand-and-flex exercises while you wait.
  • Working too much? That’s no excuse - check out these 7 exercises you can do at your desk!

How we can help: Cornelius distributes a large range of ingredients for sports nutrition, including ingredients that will give you a boost to help you on your way. Lonza’s Carnipure® L-Carnitine is a nutrient essential for energy metabolism and is ideal for sports nutrition and weight management.

Follow these achievable goals for a new healthier you and best wishes for 2017 from the Cornelius Health & Nutrition Team.
