At Index08, the world’s largest exhibition for the nonwovens industry, Collano will be showcasing hot melt adhesives, reactive systems, adhesive films and water-based adhesives. Collano adhesives are ecologically sound and innovative problem-solvers. The fact that water-based contact adhesives measure up to solvent-based products as regards adhesion and heat resistance convinced Pilatus, a Swiss aircraft manufacturer. The strict requirements imposed on tension bonds in the interior of PC-12 aircraft were fulfilled. From «a» as in automotive to «b» as in ballistics to «p» as in protective garments to «z» as in zipper we are prepared for any challenging application. For professional advice and detailed information, we invite you to visit Collano’s Stand 4117 at Index08 in Geneva from April 15 to 18, 2008, or send an e-mail to industry@collano.com I am interested in this exhibition.
Cornelius Principal, Rockwood Pigments UK Durham (formerly Elementis Pigments) are pleased to announce the launch of their new oxime free, patent pending product- Exkin OXF for anti-skinning in alkyd based paints and varnishes. Exkin OXF is comparable in terms of drying, anti-skinning, hardness and colour to methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO). MEKO is the standard anti-skinning agent currently used by most companies, but based on the results of earlier testing there is a strong possibility that after further testing under REACh that MEKO will be reclassified as, at least, a class 2 carcinogen which will seriously restrict its usage. For introductory leaflets, usage levels and drying charts please see attached documents, and request a sample via your Cornelius Representative.

Jeen International Corporation - an ideal addition to the Cornelius portfolio

Chris.Dennis@cornelius.co.uk (Chris Dennis)

We are pleased to announce that Cornelius will now be representing Jeen International Corporation in the UK, Ireland and Poland. Jeen are an innovative developer and manufacturer of raw materials for the cosmetics and personal care industries and their focus on technical inventions that deliver measurable customer benefits makes them an ideal addition to the Cornelius portfolio. Jeen's flagship is the Jeesilc range of products that offer the performance and advantages of crosslinked elastomers - yet they are neither crosspolymers nor elastomers. Crosspolymers, and silicone elastomers in particular, are heavily protected by a minefield of intellectual property meaning that their usefulness to the formulator is severely limited. Jeen identified a customer need for materials that perform like elastomers but are not restricted by patents, and developed the Jeesilc range using a unique polymerisation technique that does not rely on crosslinking. The Jeesilc range now offers the possibility of developing formulations that deliver the premium aesthetics and performance that crosslinked elastomers can offer without being limited by the many patents covering the use of those materials, therefore opening up a wealth of new product development opportunities. To find out more about Jeen and their products please contact your Cornelius representative.

Report Predicts Wave of "Green Tech"

neville.prior@cornelius.co.uk (Neville Prior)

Entrepreneurs and investors are 'inventing' a new sustainable global economy, according to an environmental research group. The Worldwatch Institute says there is a new wave of innovation based around environmental technologies. The report also says large firms are changing their ways and are investing in greener production methods. But it says a worldwide agreement on climate change is still needed to secure investment in the future. In its report 'State of the World 2008', Worldwatch estimates there was $100bn (51bn Sterling) of new investment in industries and technologies tackling climate change in the last year, which is creating new opportunities for business. It identifies examples like renewable energy, which saw $52bn of investment in 2006, up by 33%. It says that carbon trading reached an estimated $30bn in 2006, triple that of the previous year. It also points to individual companies, like that of US chemical firm Dupont, which has committed to sharp reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Worldwatch President, Chris Flavin likens the situation to the 1980s when money poured into start-up firms in the computer and software industries, which helped create giants like Microsoft and Dell. He says: "The most significant thing happening is that environmental technology is the hottest area for venture capital - it's really exciting." Aubrey Meyer is a climate campaigner and Director of the Global Commons Institute. He says there's a danger the good work could be lost amid political failures. He says: "In order to prevent local successes being swallowed in larger global failure you must have a way of measuring emissions and controlling them." Worldwatch accepts at the moment these efforts only represent a fraction of the global economy, and that more effort needs to be made to find a global agreement on combating climate change. But it argues that there has been a sea change in the thinking of businesses. In the UK, progress may be slower. A report released last month also disappointed environment campaigners. In a survey of business leaders the Carbon Trust found that just 1% of all UK firms knew their "carbon footprint" - or an account of how much carbon dioxide they produce.

With an increase of 23 percent in visitors numbers compared to the previous show, the Cornelius stand proved to be popular. The Eastern European region is currently experiencing significant market growth and growing consumer sophistication, which organisers believe boosted visitor numbers. Being present has helped Cornelius reach a greater understanding of the region and its opportunities.

A Successful Fie 2007 For Cornelius

jt@cornelius.co.uk (Joy Thomas)

Cornelius Health & Food showcased a stand at the Food Ingredients Europe 2007 Exhibition at Excel in London from 30th October to 1st November, and was successful in attracting a lot of interest from both visitors and fellow exhibitors. The show, now in its 21st year, had stands from more than 1100 companies across the globe, covering all aspects of the food industry from raw materials, through processing right up to the marketing of end products and industry publications. Companies varied from the large multi-national concerns showing on huge, glittering stands to small independent companies showing for the first time in a much smaller format. The show also included both principals and customers of Cornelius. There was a great deal of interest in the new Functional Food Toolkit being offered by Cornelius. The Toolkit contained everything that you need to start developing functional foods, from samples of raw materials complete with all the necessary data, to suggested recipes in which to try the materials and give you a little inspiration to try out your own ideas, and all in a handy reusable container. Examples of materials included in the toolkit were: Sunfiber - soluble fibre for gut health; Slendesta - potato extract for use as a satiety aid and QVital water soluble coenzyme Q10. Some toolkits may still be available, contact the Cornelius Health & Food team on 01279 714 331 for further details. The added bonus for visitors to the Cornelius stand was the chance to enter the competition draw to win a meal at one of Jamie Oliver's Restaurants in either Cornwall or London, with wine specially selected to complement the meal. The second prize was a signed copy of Jamie Oliver's latest book. The draw was made immediately after the close of the show and the winners will be announced shortly.

James.Wallace@cornelius.co.uk (James Wallace)

Bad taste or odour occasionally detected by consumers in the contents of mineral water packaged in PET bottles can normally be traced back to one or two housekeeping issues. Occasionally, however, there has been some extraction of an unpleasant chemical from the plastic bottle itself. Holliday Pigments have developed a range of ultramarine blue pigments that remove any potential organoleptic issues that may arise from using ultramarine to colour PET bottles.
Uk Manufacturers See Orders Decline

neville.prior@cornelius.co.uk (Neville Prior)

UK factory orders fell in October, a survey from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) suggests. However, the broader picture is that orders grew strongly over the last three months. The CBI said there was little evidence that weakness in financial markets was having an effect on manufacturers. The report said that orders from overseas were down in October with "exporters feeling the impact of the weaker dollar". Manufacturers were more pessimistic about the business environment "in the wake of the credit crunch". The data will fuel arguments about whether or not the Bank of England should cut interest rates. Analysts are predicting that the government is likely to leave interest rates on hold at 5.75% for the time being. "There are some tentative signs that the pace of demand and output growth will edge lower in coming months" said Ian McCafferty, the head economist at the CBI. He said that rapid inflation - seen across a variety of items notably food and oil - is putting pressure on profit margins. While the CBI's industrial trends survey suggested a slowdown, other recent data has indicated that the UK economy is in good shape. The Office for National Statistics said the UK economy grew at its fastest rate for two years in the third quarter of this year.
