Scottish Independence : A Conundrum

I am trying to work this out............

Scottish Nationalists want independence, but understandably do not want the €. They apparently do want monetary union with the British £, and not their own currency.

BUT................monetary union is normally the first step on the road to political union!!!!!!!!!!

Can somebody enlighten me?????
