When Times Were Simpler.................

Neville Prior  7 October 2009 09:09:46 AM
Yesterday evening I received an e-mail from a pal of mine in the States. It was entitled "Close Your Eyes", and was all about remembering what times were like when I was a child. Really set me to thinking how different my childhood was to that of my own children. It was a time when :
  • Mobile phones didn't exist.
  • You played in the woods and made dens all day without fear.
  • Summers days seemed long and hot, and summer nights were the same.
  • Computers, Play Station, Nintendo and even Atari weren't around...................
  • .............games were British Bulldog, It, He etc..............
  • Being sent to see the headmaster was nothing compared to the ire of your parents when you came home.
  • The "Bobby on the beat" was part of the community, and kept control with words of help or the odd "telling off".
  • Life just seemed simpler and more relaxed.

Of course, things always seem rosy in retrospect, but have we created a better world? I am not so sure!

I often wish and pray God to give me a day back in my Childhood, when my children were 2 / 4 / 6 years' old etc etc. Would you believe, this is always fulfilled in my dreams, no joke! It is a great feeling to 'Float' in old times ( ..for old times sake...) just like Future Shock I II III....

Best Wishes Neville and your family.

Sanjay, thank you for your thoughts, appreciated. We may all be better off, but are we truly "better" off?????

That makes me feel old!

An interesting question might be to try to determine how much more productive we are these days? There is no doubt that, for example, creating a graph is easier with a computer than it is with a pencil and piece of graph paper (something younger readers may never have seen!). However, there are so many more ways to fill time too - they might be enjoyable but are they always productive?

It seem hard to imagine how life went on before mobile phones and the internet - yet, somehow society and business did actually function.

Anyway, I need to go and do something more conventionally productive - cook dinner!

Neil, good comments, and hope dinner was good!

I can remember our business about 30 years ago, when there were no computers, everything was typed on a typewriter, by a whole team of typists. Call reports were dictated or hand written. Invoices went out about 1 month after the delivery. We still made money and got things done!!!!!
